Vuelta a Espana. The great success of Daniel Moreno
1 settembre 2013 - Another great victory for Daniel Moreno in the 68th edition of “Vuelta a Espana”: after two second places, in stage 2 and 8, and the triumph in stage 4, Katusha Team’s Spanish rider incredibly encored in the ninth stage, 163 km from Antequera to Valdepenas.
The stage was characterized by the impressive “wall” of the last km, where the climb reaches a highest gradient of 24%. As soon as the uphill started, Daniel Moreno attacked: nobody could follow him, and thanks to this performance the Spanish riders from Katusha Team was able to take the red jersey for the first time in career, taking the place of the former leader Nicolas Roche (Saxo-Tinkoff) for just one second.
Great news also from the other leader of Katusha Team, Joaquim Rodriguez, which took the third place, 3” behind his teammate, right behind Alejandro Valverde (Movistar): Purito gained like this some other seconds over other favorite riders such as Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and Ivan Basso (Cannondale). In fact, thanks to this performance, Rodriguez moved to 6th in general classification, 56” far from Moreno.
The daily breakaway was formed by two riders, Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil) and Luke Rowe (Sky), followed in a second time by Anthony Roux (FDJ), Francisco Javier Aramendia (Caja Rural) and Lloyd Mondory (AG2R La Mondiale). The five were able to take a maximum gap of 6’30”, but the group often leaded by Katusha Team for Moreno and Rodriguez soon started to increase his pace and slow down the difference. Their attempt was slowly neutralized: with the group in lock step, many riders tried to attack before the last climbing.
One of them, Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) was able to take a good gap of 25”: but Katusha Team once again controlled the attempt and was able to neutralize it with 2 km to go, right before the Valdepenas uphill where Moreno proved once again his great shape and made the difference with a powerful rush.

“Of course I’m very happy about this win – said MORENO – and obviously about the fact I took the red jersey. Today I talked with Purito and we planned this strategy: I had to attack in the same place he did when he won in 2011. I did, and thanks to him and the whole team I managed to take this incredible result. Joaquim, Valverde and Nibali are still the favorite riders: the third week will be very tough and probably crucial for general classification. I think I deserved this result: after ‘Tour de France’ I did a great work, we had a training camp in altitude in Andorra, we did a very hard job but it was worth it. I know it will be hard to keep this jersey: there are still plenty of stages, starting from tomorrow when the climbing will be suitable to the characteristics of Ivan Basso, since it’s very long and regular. But anyways we won’t go crazy about that: if I manage to keep it, it would be great; but things are going great until now for Katusha, I’m the leader and Purito has already recovered some of the time loss and quickly moving in general classification. So we have to continue like this, and that’s the most important thing”.
“I’m very happy for Dani – said PURITO – he’s in an incredible shape right now. We’re in a perfect condition for general classification. Today I had to follow Dani when he attacked, but the truth is I couldn’t: in fact, nobody could”..
